Domestic Violence Forum
Welcome to the Islamic Society of North America's (ISNA) Domestic Violence Forum. This site was established to bring awareness to the issue of domestic violence in Muslim communities and provide opportunities for collaboration, exchanges of information and the promotion of continued research in the field of domestic violence's impact on Muslim families.
For any non-Muslims visiting this page, you may want to visit our guide for non-Muslims link. It provides some terminology and basic information for those whose knowledge of Islam is limited.
If you have any questions or comments head to the feedback forum to let us know what you think.
Again, welcome and May Allah (God) guide our intention and efforts.
Domestic Violence is a disease like none other; its effects on families and communities are time and again proven to be catastrophic. Muslim institutions and organizations have been silent too long on the topic and we are losing a generation of our youth and families to the effects of abuse in the home. We have to step out of our Masjids and tap into our communities, for those Muslims who are truly at risk are invisible to us and we are losing them. InshAllah, this will be a first small step in aiding those who are ready to step out and embrace those of our Ummah who are most in need.
**You will find gender specific language through out this site when discussing domestic violence. We recognize that abuse can happen to men as well as women. The language simply reflects the statistic that 92% of cases involving abuse is male to female.
If you are in crisis call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 or visit our Shelter & Program page for further assistance.
